The University of Alberta is excited to announce the Winter 2023 Corbett Aphasia Rehabilitation and Education (CARE) program from January 19 to March 31, 2023.
What:
- Group therapy for adults with aphasia
- Services are provided by SLP students under the supervision of a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
Who:
- Adults with aphasia
- Open to all severity levels and aphasia types
Format:
- Groups will be virtual or in-person (please see the schedule for the format of each group)
Schedule:
- January 19 – March 31, 2023
- Thursdays and Fridays
THURSDAYS
CARE to read 1 (Higher level group) (Virtual)
Thursdays @ 9:00 – 10:15 AM
- The focus of this group will be reading and discussion.
- Open to higher level readers comfortable reading paragraphs.
- This group will choose one book to read together during the semester.
CARE to read 2 (Lower level group) (Virtual)
Thursdays @ 9:00 – 10:15 AM
- The focus of this group will be reading and discussion.
- Open to lower level readers comfortable reading phrases and sentences.
- This group will choose one book to read together during the semester.
Movement & Aphasia (In person, Corbett Hall, U of A, Edmonton)
Thursdays @ 11:00 – 12:15 PM
- This group will focus on communication and movement.
- A variety of movements will be explored, including: yoga, tai chi, dance, stretching, etc.
- Each week there will be movement, exercises and activities to get your body moving.
- Communication activities will be related to the movements and exercises.
- Open to all communication and physical ability levels.
FRIDAYS
Toastmasters (Virtual)
Fridays @ 9:00 – 10:15 AM
- This group will focus on talking.
- Weekly speeches and functional scripts can be practiced.
- Each week will have a new theme.
- Open to all levels.
Current Events (Virtual)
Fridays @ 9:00 – 10:15 AM
- The focus of this group will be talking and understanding.
- We will have discussions about current events.
- Open to all levels.
CARE for Women (Virtual)
Fridays @ 11:00 – 12:15 PM
- This group combines talking and social opportunities.
- Experiences, such as chocolate tasting, yoga, painting, etc that allow communication opportunities will also be included.
- Only open to women with aphasia.
- Open to all levels.

Cost:
- Each group costs $200.
- Clients pay monthly.
- An invoice will be sent for sessions attended.
- Any client who cannot afford these fees can apply for subsidized funding through the Corbett Clinic Client Assistance Program Fund.
Registration:
- Group sizes are limited.
- Clients can register for all groups they are interested in and will be able to attend a maximum of 2 groups
- Registration deadline: Tuesday, January 10, 2023
- We will confirm your registration once we have received all registrations and will email you by January 12, 2023
